This morning Jack was making up a word puzzle game for his mum, and Grace was throwing tantrums because her teeth were hurting her. Both were oblivious to the turmoil in the global financial markets.

I can’t say I’m surprised at the current turn of world events. They are suggesting it could turn into the Second Global Financial Crises, but I am inclined to believe the first one hadn’t really finished yet.

It is rather disquieting – knowing the ramifications could directly impact your life, and that of Grace and Jack. But there is nothing much I can do about it – aside watch with morbid fascination as events unfold.

The first crisis was meant to be a wakeup call. It was a warning and a punch on the nose that told us the excesses, hot air and gambling in our markets had gone too far. We were meant to learn a lesson – but instead a great deal of public money was spent on try to minimise the pain while maintaining the status quo.

I can’t help but think if we accepted a little more pain the first time around, that we wouldn’t be here facing a possibly even worse second crisis. Oh well, this might be an interesting ride that pushes us out of our comfort zone for a while.

Had gastro for the last four days. There has got to be easier ways to lose some weight. Most of life on hold or curtailed, with a couple days of work missed. Family keeping their distance - either from concern for catching the same bug, or sick of listening to all the complaining.

It turns out that Viral Gastroenteritis can last for more than 10 days. I just wish I didn't have to learn that through personal experience.

The doctor seemed to feel sorry for me, and bulk billed most of my appointments. I certainly felt sad and sorry for myself!

Recovery has been a long, slow slog. I am still only about 80% right after 12 days – with most of that improvement only coming over the last couple days. I am however very glad to be on the mend.

Al’s had to do extra running around after the kids, and we fell behind with some of the tasks around the house. I am looking forward to getting back into some normality.

Jack was one of a team of 6 Prep’s whose project got a High Distinction in a State Math’s competition. The school obviously put some focus on the competition – with 16 entries submitted covering all year levels, and 6 of them receiving High Distinctions. There is an award ceremony late in October that he might get the opportunity to attend.

We continue to be really happy with the school. This being just another example of the many opportunities and extension programs they are providing to their students.

When Al arrives home with the kids, I can't go out to greet them. I have to sit inside and wait. Grace loves knocking loudly on the door, and if I come out too soon she gets very upset.

Al usually takes the kids to school and childcare in the morning. As they (usually to some extent) rush out the door, I follow along, strapping Grace into her chair, running back into the house to fetch whatever toy she suddenly decides she wants in the car, wishing them all a good day, and wave good bye. Most mornings as Al reverses out of the drive, Grace sits in her chair with a couple books in her lap, and a bear or baby under each arm, and waves goodbye back.
