31 Weeks down. Al is still doing well, although has just started feeling some back ache. Right through the pregnancy so far people have remarked on how well she is looking.

Been a very busy week. Out roleplaying last Friday night, visiting Friends of Al's out of the city, a wander around a nearby swamp, friends dropping around home, and then an extremely busy week at work. We got another skip this weekend - to basically throw away all the cardboard that came wrapped around the baby products we have been purchasing. Yesterday spent the afternoon and evening on a bucks day out. Enjoyable in a tame way. Also cleaned out the walk in robes - where I discarded over half my clothes because I no longer wear them. All this neatening and organising is making us both feel more comfortable and prepared.

(Email to Irene.) In general I've still been feeling really well most of the time, just tired here and there. Had a really sore lower back for about a week a couple weeks back, but that was helped a lot by sleeping with a pillow between my legs. I am now only getting a little back pain here and there now.

Had a pregnancy massage last weekend that I enjoyed – I decided it was high time for a bit of pampering! My OB has told me in the past couple of visits that my weight gain has been excellent - exactly what was expected and I haven't put on anything additional. (In reality I think I have put on a few extra kgs, but not too much, and I will worry about that afterwards at any rate!) He also commented it was obvious I was looking after myself. My latest visit was yesterday, and he told me that the baby is already down in position, which I didn’t expect this early, but he said it may still turn and move in and out of position so he wasn't concerned. He told me that I seem to have a contented baby, which is what we have been thinking as well, so that was also nice to hear. Just hope it continues that way after the baby is born!

Quite a few people have told me I am glowing and looking really well, so it's nice to be getting so many positive comments. There is an ad on TV down here presently talking about the glowing skin of pregnant women, and a few people have told me I look like the people on the ads - not sure if that ad is being shown in Canberra (for some moisturiser or skincare product I think). So everything continues to go well thus far and still very happily pregnant and enjoying the process. Feel happier as each week goes by, as my only concern now is that the baby goes to 'full term' and don't end up with a prem baby with the related health and developmental problems.

I keep telling myself I should slow down as I'd hate to bring on a prem baby by not resting enough, but we continue to be really busy and while I'm feeling fine, fitting everything in now so I can relax in last month, and just trying to rest where I can on week nights, and in between things we do on weekends.

Started our ante-natal classes last week, so that's been good to get a better understanding of the hospital process, when to go to hospital, birth stages and what to expect, pain relief options, etc. Also nice to meet a few other couples at similar stages as us - there are 9 couples altogether and we are about middle of the age range. Will be interesting to see if any of us are in hospital at the same time (we have earliest due date after being pushed back to this class after the previous class was full).

We were at our 3rd antenatal class tonight - covering the unexpected outcomes that might happen. At the end the midwife asked us all to close our eyes for 30 seconds and think of a favourite, calming place. I thought of a swamp just before sunrise, waiting for the first flight of ducks over the decoys. She then added, "just the three of you". (Baby, Al and Me...) I fought for the next 20 seconds not to laugh out loud.

All is still going great. Enjoying it day by day.

At the antenatal class last night the midwife asked how many of the 10 couples knew the sex of their baby. To my surprise only us and one other couple raised their hands. We have found knowing the sex of our baby to be a really positive thing. We use its name (or a variation of) when referring or talking to it, which seems to have helped associate it as a real being, with its own personality. Al and I certainly already consider it a member of our family.

There is one negative with such familiarity - trying to keep the sex secret. We visited my parents last weekend. On the three hour drive there we practised referring to it only as "the baby". It took almost the entire trip before we stopped making regular slips. Over the visit we both noticed the other slip the sex (using a he or she reference) into their conversation at least once. It did not appear obvious and we got no obvious reaction from the people we were talking to, but it was a concern.

While very happy to have found the sex out this time, we might not do so if lucky enough to have a next time.

(Email to Jude.) We are half way through the antenatal classes now. Makes it all start to feel closer and more real. Good to get better understanding of the whole birth process, hospital process, pain relief options, etc, and also to meet a few other couples around the same stage as us, and see how their bellies are progressing each week compared to mine! I am still feeling really well the majority of time, just a little tired here and there.

I have a killer sore throat. Been a long time since I've had one, but it is a physical (and painful) reminder of how run down I am at the moment. Been moving flat out all year, both with work and general life. It has really been wearing, and I just haven't had the opportunity to recoup. Al (and I) have been concerned that when I have the two weeks off at the baby's birth that I'll crash. (Big time...) I've been trying to organise a 5 day weekend to hopefully take the edge off - but it is proving to be extremely difficult. Blah. I'm too tired to rest.
